Hectic last minute preparations

If you want to meet a planner, let me introduce you to Alice. This year was not the Alice Alice.  With her heart surgery, her work and my photo shoots. we had little or no time to prepare.  We decided not to commit to the vacation until we were confident with Alice's surgery result. When the Dr came into the recovery room to speak with Alice and I, he prescribed a vacation to Italy.

This year we decided to "live like the locals" on our vacation to Italy.  The only thing we locked down was the airplane and the the apartment in Rome.

Alice's preparation was mainly what shoes to buy and bring.

My preparation was what camera equipment to bring. My biggest dilemma was which camera to bring and should I bring a backup. Our focus was different but the result will be amazing.

My chosen camera get for our Italy trip.

Train ride from Delray Beach to Miami Airport

We love to take the train from Delray Beach to Miami airport. The Tri-Rail train does not compete with Brightline. However, it drops us right off in the middle of the airport.  We love that.  You would be amazed how many people actually take the Tri-Rail to the Miami airport.

Alice on the plane with the Italian Stallion

Due to our last-minute scheduling of our flight to Rome, we were unable to book a pair of contiguous seats on the airplane. Our confirmed seats were with someone else between us. We had hoped we could talk the middle person out of their seat so we could sit together and hold hands.  So here we are in the middle aisle with three seats, and both of us, taking the aisle seat and the middle seat, waiting for the unknown traveler.   I was worried we may get a 400 pound Covid infected traveler laden with twins who she was nursing mid flight and refused to change the seat. While we are boarding the plane, I teased Alice telling her that some lady may take the middle seat, and I may mistakenly hold her hand. as the travelers boarded the plane, I looked anxiously at each person coming in one by one. Oh no this can't be the guy.  This is the guy.  Yup the Italian stallion with the look of a cross between Dr Mcdreamy and George Clooney.  His looks, his aura, his clothing ....  I knew I was in trouble.  Sure enough it was him.  He has the middle seat. I looked at Alice and she smiled.  After asking the young Sylvester Stallone if he could exchange seats, she looked at me and smiled, "I get to sit by the two best looking men on the plane". I wasn't alarmed I knew he didn't have the entire Schmuki package.

Alice with the second best looking guy on the plane. What a lucky girl!

Our first walking tour and night out

We had a great first day in Rome. After resting a bit and unpacking we went out and took a look at our neighborhood. We love it here.

We had a great dinner at an Italian resteraunt just next to our apartment. We enjoyed the best pasta with pesto we have ever had.

We met 2 great fun couples from Long Island at the resteraunt who promised to read my Pompeii city of sin blog.  They asked me to take their picture because they saw my fancy Nikon on the table.

Our new friends from Long Island New York

Day one is over and we still like each other a lot. Looking forward to days 2-40. Please let me know you are reading and enjoying my blog. This is a lot of work, but mostly a labor of love and a documentation of our wonderful life together.

Photography Challenge Day 3 - Self Portrait

This challenge is not about a selfie taken on your iPhone. However those iPhone users can learn very good techniques by following some of the tips in this challenge.

One of your self portraits must include something related to the coronavirus and what is happening in your own personal space.

My suggestions for self portrait set up include:

  • backdrop

  • at least one external flash or strobe

  • camera mounted on tripod

  • use of remote trigger or self toner mode on camera.  I set my camera for nine shots with a three second pause between shots which will assure my strobes recycling time and a different pose

  • manual focus on a pre-designated spot

  • F-11 or even more shut down to improve chance of in focus

  • Use of 1 or more external props

  • take many shots for a better chance of getting the exact shot you want

  • For drama try a black backdrop

Points awarded for participation in this challenge:

  • Five points for three or more submitted photos using at least six of the techniques previously defined

  • One point for one submitted photo

  • 10 points for best self portrait of the group. I get to be the judge and jury LOL

I have included a few images from my practice session yesterday in my home studio in Delray Beach Florida.

My setup for the following shots:

2-3 Paul Buff Strobes, Black and Blue Backdrop, Nikon D850 Camera, 35MM 1.8 Nikon and 85 MM 1.4 Sigma Lens, SNOOT, 18” OMNI Reflector, Light Meter, Tripod and others

Wynwood Walls Swimsuit Shoot with Samantha

Every once in a while I reach out for a photo shoot.  I guess my camera just gets lonely.  I don’t take enough pictures ... over 25,000 photos taken in 2017.

Wynwood Walls/Arts District is always such an exciting place to go.  First of all they are always camera/model friendly.  Police officers and grounds crews don’t come up to us and ask us for our “permit” and if we don’t have it, we are asked to leave or even worse yet escorted off.

Every time I go to Wynwood, which seems to be 2-3 times per year, there are new paintings that were painted on top of previously painted walls.  Ever changing.  That’s exciting, except when your favorite wall/painting is no longer there.

My models family drove all the way down from Orlando (4 hour drive) just to shoot with me at Wynwood.  What an honor.  Samantha is one of KK Swimwear’s premier swimsuit model The President/Owner/Creator of KK Natalia Garcia responded to my search for a shoot on Sunday.  She had planned on shooting Samantha herself.... a very good photographer in her own right.  She asked me to fill in for her because of personal issues that came up.

I would like to personally thank Samantha, her parents and especially Natalia for the invite.  Samanthas father was so helpful lugging around my heavy equipment and holding my lights!  I could not have done this without you.

You will see some fantastic photos in the near future.  Here are just a few of my first edits.

A few photo tips when shooting Wynwood Walls:

If you are shooting a model, people, THEY are the subject, NOT the walls.  If you want to include detail of the WALL painting and the model, make sure your F-STOP is approprate based on your lens choice, your distance from the model and the models distance from the wall.  I frequently shoot multiple F-Stops so I can choose later the best choice.  Last tip; there are lots of lines, use them (leading lines).  Always make sure the lines draw attention to your subject, the model.
